Commissioners Appointed to National Association of Counties’ Steering Committees

Commissioners Olsen and Scharmann hold their NACo committee appointment letters.

Churchill County Commissioners Pete Olsen and Bus Scharmann were recognized at the Nov. 7 Board of County Commissioners meeting for their recent appointments to serve on steering committees for the National Association of Counties, or NACo.

Olsen, a Churchill County dairyman, will serve on the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Policy Steering Committee while Scharmann, former head of Western Nevada College’s Fallon Campus, will lend his expertise to the Human Services and Education Policy Steering Committee.

Founded in 1935, NACo is the national organization that represents county governments in the United States. It provides essential services to the nation’s 3,069 counties by advocating for county priorities, promoting exemplary county policies, nurturing leadership skills, optimizing county and taxpayer resources and enriching the public’s understanding of county government. Congress and federal agencies often turn to NACo committees for feedback on policy decisions being made in Washington, DC.

As members of their respective steering committees, Olsen and Scharmann will participate in monthly conference calls and attend the 2020 NACo Legislative Conference and the 2020 NACo Annual Conference (in Orlando, Florida and Washington, DC, respectively).

All of Churchill County’s Commissioners serve on a number of boards and committees throughout the county and state and now, through their appointments to NACo’s steering committees, Olsen and Scharmann represent Churchill County at the national level.
