The Churchill County Sheriff’s Office was founded in 1864 with the appointment of Walter L. Gates as Sheriff by the Governor of Nevada.  The first election was held later that year and James G. Hughes was the first elected Churchill County Sheriff – elected to a 2-year term.  Since then there have been twenty-eight different men elected Sheriff of Churchill County with the current Sheriff being the 30th in the long history of the Office.  In fact, in 1866 the election ended in a tie between Tom H. Ellison and E. L Coldron.  Both men served as Sheriff until Sheriff Ellison died in 1867.

The looking-glass of history gives one the understanding of their own miniscule significance when the sands of time are falling.  The most significant thing one can do is serve, therefore, service is the center of our philosophy at the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office.
