General Information

The Justice of the Peace is required to preside over a variety of hearings, including:

  • Preliminary Examinations in Felony and Gross Misdemeanor Cases

  • Trials for Misdemeanor Criminal Matters

  • Trials for Traffic Violations

  • Formal Civil Suits

  • Small Claims Actions

  • Temporary Restraining Order Hearings 

  • Landlord/Tenant Hearings

In addition, the Judge performs marriage ceremonies, and is subject to call out at all hours of the day and night to issue search and arrest warrants.

The Justice of the Peace is also responsible for the supervision of the court staff (which is currently an Office Manager, 5 Clerks and a part time Office Aid), the calendaring of all matters that must come before the Court, as well as the administrative duties that come with running a department of Churchill County, such as budgeting and disbursing funds collected from fines and fees.
