Guidelines for Obtaining a Business License

The following is being provided to assist you in acquiring a business license in Churchill County. There may be special conditions for certain uses in certain areas or zones. If you have any questions you may call or stop by the office on weekdays (excluding State and federal holidays) between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm. Inspections may be required by the Planning Department, Building Department, Fire Department, and the Health Department prior to issuance of a business license.

Information You Will Need to Provide
When Applying for a Business License

1. Business Location – Address - Assessor's Parcel Number - Owners Name

  1. Is your business located in the county, outside of the city limits OR will business be conducted at a location in the county, outside of the city limits?
  2. Is the property zoned correctly for the proposed use? - Contact the Planning Department with your address or Assessor’s Parcel Number.
  3. Do you own the property? - If so, please complete the business license application packet.
  4. Other owner of property? - If so, please provide letter or contract from property owner evidencing their permission to utilize the property by you for your proposed business activity, and complete the business license application packet.
  5. Will new construction or remodeling be needed? – You will need to contact the Building Department with the specifics and discuss the plan requirements, etc.
  6. Are signs needed? – If so, you will need to contact the Planning and Building Departments to ensure the sign(s) comply with code requirements.
2. Supplemental information, but not limited to:
  1. Completed Churchill County Business License Application.
  2. Fictitious name documentation – This document must be filed with the Churchill County Clerk/Treasurer (NRS 602)
  3. State of Nevada Business License– This is obtained through the Secretary of State’s office. We will need a copy of the Nevada State Business License or statement of exemption from them (NRS 360.780).
  4. Nevada State Sales/Use Tax Permit—You must register your business with the Department of Taxation in order to obtain this documentation or exemption statement (NRS 372.220).
  5. Proof of Industrial Insurance (Workers’ Compensation) coverage (NRS 616A to D).
  6. If a registered entity– a copy of the first page of the articles of organization with the Secretary of State seal, registered name and date organized (NRS 269.171).
  7. If a contractor – a copy of your Nevada State Contractor’s license(s) (NRS 624).
  8. If the business deals with food, beverages or cosmetics – You will need to provide us with a copy of your State Health Permit obtained from the Nevada Bureau of Health Protection Services, 775-423-2281 or 775-684-4200.
  9. A copy of any other permits or licenses that are required for the type of business (i.e. DMV, NDOT, Real Estate Broker, Massage Therapist, etc.)
  10. Business License Fee:  $125.00 annually by calendar quarters or $50.00 per calendar quarter.  These fees are set by resolution of the board of county commissioners.  (Be aware that this website might not accurately reflect the current fees.  Please contact the Planning Department to verify these.)

3. Operating a business from the home (i.e.: service occupation or home business)

  1. A Conditional Use Permit or Special Use Permit must be obtained prior to issuance of a business license for a home-based business. You will need to contact the Planning Department.
  2. Conditional Use Permits may be issued administratively once completion of the application and supporting documentation are provided. The applicant agrees to comply with all the conditions as required by the permit. Application Fee $75.00. Annual Renewal $25.00
  3. The Churchill County Planning Commission at a public hearing considers Special Use Permits.  Issuance of a Special Use Permit is discretionary on the part of the Planning Commission and not issued as a matter of right.  Application Fee is $300.00.  There is no annual renewal fee. *Note: The Special Use Permit is treated like a Conditional Use Permit in regards to fees if related to a home or service occupation [see CCC 5.04.090(H)].
