Churchill County Sheriff — Civil Division

The Civil Division holds the primary responsibility for the various civil papers that are received by the Sheriff’s Office for service. The Sheriff is mandated by Nevada Statute to serve civil papers.

The most common types of papers received for service include: Summons, Subpoenas and Eviction Notices. Besides civil papers the Civil Division is responsible for several other facets of the Sheriff’s Office’s overall function, including:

  • Concealed weapons permits

  • County work permits.

  • City and County gaming licenses.

  • County liquor licenses.

  • Registration of Ex-Felons.

  • Registration and Community notification in reference to Sex Offenders residing in the County.

  • Summons of Trial Jurors.

  • Service and monitoring of Writs of Garnishments (i.e. wages or bank accounts.)

  • Conducting Sheriff’s sales pursuant to Writs of Execution on Real and Personal property.

  • Service of other Writs, such as Writs of Possession.

  • Processing and submitting Driver’s License revocation orders in reference to Driving Under the Influence revocations.

  • Monthly billings for incarceration by other agencies.

  • Submitting claims for reimbursement to the State of Nevada Attorney General’s Office for extradition of felons back to Churchill County to face felony charges.

  • Receiving and tracking restitution payments owed to the Sheriff’s Office.

  • Depositing Sheriff’s fees with the Churchill County Treasurer.

  • Other duties in direct support of other divisions.

The Civil Division experienced a high volume of civil papers received in 2005, at 5,869. This represents an incredible 29% increase over 2004. The Division almost exclusively relied on the Patrol staff to accomplish the service of these papers, as their time permits.

Another area which experienced a large increase was Concealed Weapons permit applications. 77 CCW applications were returned in 2005, compared with 32 the previous year.
