Detention Facilities

The Law Enforcement Facility houses the detention facility, communications division and record storage. The facility also houses the District Court, which occupies the second floor. Currently there are 11 Deputies and 1 Sergeant assigned to the detention facility. Two deputies are assigned to court duties, one in Justice Court and one in District Court.

The detention facility has beds to hold 52 prisoners with the population of the facility varying from day to day.

Increases in inmate population by even a small number results in a rippling effect on budget items. In the past there have been as many as 80 prisoners held in the detention facility at one time. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner for these inmates are prepared by Churchill Community Hospital at a cost of approximately $2.25 per inmate meal. Inmates requiring medical attention are either taken to the Churchill Community Hospital or seen by a local contract physician providing service in the detention facility. Inmates requiring dental care are taken to one of the local dentists.

The detention center operates a Trusty work program that assigns sentenced prisoners to work outside of the Detention Facility at various locations such as Parks and Recreation, Churchill County Road Department, Senior Citizens Center, Hospital Auxiliary, as well as for other County and City offices. The trustees are paid at a rate of $1.00 per day and can also receive good time and work time, which can reduce the length of their incarceration. During the past year trusties worked approximately 2250 days, which equates to 18,000 hours. Trusty wages of $2,250 is minuscule when compared to a normal estimated wage of $8.00 per hour, which would equate to $144,000.
