STATE VETERANS CEMETERIES

Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery
Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery • Fernley, NV

In 1978, Congress established the State Cemetery program to complement the National Cemetery System. Under this program, the Federal Government provides financial assistance to states that desire to construct and operate a State Veterans Cemetery.

In 1987, the Nevada State Legislature approved funding for two such cemeteries, one located in Northern Nevada and one in Southern Nevada. Both Nevada Cemeteries opened in 1990 under the administration of the Nevada Commission for Veteran Affairs. Both are funded by the State of Nevada.

Eligible veterans and members of their immediate family, may be buried at either the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley or the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City. There is no charge for the plot or for opening and closing of the grave site of a veteran. A $350 fee is charged for the burial of a family member. Headstones are provided at no cost by the federal government. Military honors are provided by military units, however, a cemetery staff member can assist in making these arrangements.

Both cemeteries are located in quiet, peaceful surroundings, and provide an atmosphere of respect and dignity to those who have served. The cemeteries were established in 1990 and have become the final resting place for over 10,000 veterans and their family members. One plot is allowed for the interment of each eligible veteran and for each member of their immediate family, except where soil conditions or the number of decedents of the family require more than one plot. Specific plots may not be reserved as plots are assigned by the cemetery superintendent. Casket and cremation burials can be accommodated at both cemeteries.
